This is a strange little book that captures the alienation and uncertainty of a newcomer from the west in Lithuania. It is not just the language and the rountines of life he finds difficult, but also a sense of stranger forces at play around him. He has come to Vilnius to find out more about his family's history and communicates via email with his sister in the US. Being of Lithuanian descent, I was interested in reading this book. It turned out to be better than I thought it would be. Held my attention throughout. After have read it several months ago, I still find myself thinking about how strong the individuals who actually experienced these types events were. I would recommend this book, but it is not a casual reading book.
I got out of this what I read it for.....to find out more of day to day life in Lithuania. All 4 of my grandparents came from there and as I get older, I'm very curious about how they lived. I liked it a lot but the strange thing is it got kind of wierd towards the end and then ended wierd. I also think it would've made more sense if you knew earlier in the book who he was talking to.
It was a quick and easy read .Observations of a brother and sister of life and happenings around them expressed in letters sent.
It's hard to describe this book. I bought it hoping to learn more about my Lithuanian heritage, and it did provide that but so much more. I was very surprised. I enjoyed the writing style, a series between a brother, a scientist working in Vilnius and sister back in the US, which gave it a personal perspective. It touched on many subjects- some universal, some philosophical, some practical, even mundane. While dealing with some horrific and sad topics at times, it was not without humor. This book left me satisfied and with a lot to think about, so much in such a relatively short book. I said "wow" under my breath several times while reading it.
This begins almost as a travel tale, but there is a great deal more here than that. It is an ambitious epistolary novel--email, as the setting is contemporary. A brother, doing scientific research on HIV in Vilnius, corresponds with his beloved sister back in the US. Their family fled Lithuania, a step ahead of the Nazi's, and the children are first generation Americans. Along with the sad and violent history of this small, ancient Baltic State, we learn about the narrator's family diaspora. Even more compelling to this reader were the intelligent, sensitive ruminations on human nature. The self-destructive behavior which appears to be almost inherent in our species, shows itself not only in the choices made by individuals, but in the even more dangerous and horrifying choices made by societies. And just when you have digested all that, the tale suddenly turns in upon itself and becomes poignantly, devastatingly personal. An added bonus there are beautiful, mysterious illustrations throughout.
Quick read and very interesting.
With the dissolution of the former Soviet Union, information is emerging on life after WWII and the purges, including the nationally-supported extermination of 90-95% of Lithuania's Jewish population. The time frame is now. The mists of time hover. Fascinating read for anyone who wonders about how is life 60 years after the "Great Catastrophe."
